Starting location
City Hall of Stanstead TownshipFitch Bay, Autumn in Mellow Mode
Fitch Bay’s decor seems suspended in time: small family farms dot its rural roads, mountains gaze at their reflections in the bay, and autumn colours set the landscape ablaze. It’s a detour to be lived at the pace of one’s steps, with a wide-open heart. Here, we do not run; we contemplate, we breathe, and we let the serenity of the Eastern Townships close around us.
Itinerary
Fitch Bay Detours
Wholly characterized as a contemplative outing, this adventure starts at the Canton de Stanstead Town Hall, where there is space to park. Slowly walk up Noël Road to access the Panorama Trail, 1.1 km away. This magnificent 5.6-km loop, used by walkers and cyclists alike, offers panoramic views of the forest. Dogs are welcome as long as they are on the leash.
Having taken the time to bask in this walk, head over to the century-old Narrows covered bridge that spans the bay. Stroll across slowly. Hear the creaking of the wood, look at the flamboyant fall reflections under your steps and imagine all that might have gone across since 1881. The Narrows bridge is easily accessed from chemin Ridgewood.
The road then takes you to Magoon Point for a sight worthy of a nature postcard: a panoramic view of the mountains in the background, the immensity of the sky… a vista seemingly meant for contemplation.
Finally, wrap up your detour on chemin Brown’s Hill, a country road edged by flamboyant trees, whose every turn reveals new, cinema-worthy scenery. Higher up on the road, the landscape opens up: mountains and lakes emerge together like a cinematographic backdrop. One goes away with the impression of having slowed down time, within the space of an autumnal loop.
